Pancha Puranam is a beautiful collection of songs that we sing during temple poojai, a sacred ritual. It’s a way for us to express our love to God in the oldest language in the world, Tamil. The collection consists of five sets of songs that are traditionally sung in this order:
- 1. Thevaram
- 2. Tiruvasagam
- 3. Tiruvisaippa
- 4. Tiruppallandu
- 5. Periyapuranam
Depending on the temple’s principal or main deity, we may also add Tirupugal and Abirami Anthati at the end. It’s a wonderful opportunity for everyone, including children and adults of all ages, to come together and immerse themselves in devotion through these melodious hymns.
Guide to sing Pancha Puranam
Here’s a spiritual guide for singing Pancha Puranam in temples:
- Inform the Priest: Before the morning or evening prayer, let the priest know that you will be singing Pancha Puranam.
- Initiate the Singing: Sometimes, others may wait to sing. Be brave and initiate by saying out “Thiruchitrambalam” first. Don’t hesitate, as your voice can resonate beautifully in the temple.
- Sing Loudly: Since temples are usually large, sing loudly so that your devotion fills the space.
- Start and End with “Thiruchitrambalam”: Begin and conclude your singing with “Thiruchitrambalam” for a complete and auspicious performance.
- Use the Pancha Puranam Book on this page: Keep the songs printed even if you know them. If you stumble, having them handy helps. With experience, you’ll sing confidently without looking. Let your soulful voice fill the temple with joy!
