Syllabus
Saraswati, goddess of music and learning

No guessing. Here is exactly what you will learn.

Call it a syllabus, a roadmap, or just what you'll learn. Every beginner sees this list and thinks "I'm not ready for this." Every student looks back six months later and laughs at that thought. The terms are just labels. The real journey is the moment your hands find the groove and you don't want to stop.

Foundations+
  • Basic hand posture and grip
  • Understanding the mridangam: right side (valanthalai) and left side (thoppi)
  • Producing clear, resonant strokes
  • Introduction to talam
Basic Strokes+
  • Ta, Dhi, Tha, Nam, Num
  • Single strokes and combinations
  • Building speed and clarity
  • Stroke accuracy with proper tone
Talam & Rhythm+
  • Adi talam (8 beats)
  • Rupaka talam (6 beats)
  • Keeping cycle with hands and feet
  • Playing within the cycle accurately
Korvais & Patterns+
  • Simple korvais (ending phrases)
  • Repetition patterns (1x, 2x, 3x)
  • Building rhythmic phrases
  • Fitting patterns to talam cycles
Accompaniment+
  • Following the vocalist or melodic instrument
  • Supporting kritis and compositions
  • Recognising eduppu (starting points)
  • Stage and ensemble awareness
Theory & Ear Training+
  • Understanding rhythmic cycles
  • Recognising and counting nadai changes
  • Listening to masters and concert recordings
  • Developing internal laya (rhythmic sense)

Scary words. Easy concept. You'll be playing real rhythms long before any of these terms ever feel hard.
