"Good professional teacher who encourages students very well. My daughter learned very well from the teacher in just a few months. She takes her own time to teach each and every student efficiently and never gives up on them. She helps students improve from their mistakes, and gives good explanations before each lesson so the students understand well."

The tabla is a pair of hand drums from the Indian subcontinent, the wooden tabla for treble, the metallic bayan for bass, played with the palms and fingers. Central to both Carnatic and Hindustani classical traditions and dating back centuries, it is one of the most sophisticated percussion instruments in the world, capable of everything from gentle meditative patterns to explosive rhythmic fireworks.
More than music. Tabla builds rhythm, focus and a sharper mind that carries into everything else.

Develop a deep understanding of tala (rhythm cycles) used across Indian classical music. Tabla training builds an internal clock that lifts every musician around you.
Studies show learning tabla enhances mathematical thinking, pattern recognition, and working memory. The complex bol syllables engage both hemispheres of the brain simultaneously.

A fun and nurturing introduction to rhythm and sound. Short, engaging sessions designed around a child's attention span. Simple bols, clapping games, and basic tala, building a genuine love for music before technique.
A clear, step-by-step start, tala counting, the core bols, and reading simple rhythm notation. The ideal age to build solid fundamentals and real confidence at the drums.
A focused beginner start for teens and young adults, solid technique, clean tone, and the discipline that carries into everything else. Beginner slots now open.
Whether you are picking up an instrument for the first time or returning after years away, beginner classes are fully flexible and hobby-paced, on your own schedule. Beginner slots now open.
Common questions about learning tabla.
You can use our tabla for the first few classes, but ideally you should have your own. Having your own instrument makes the learning feel truly yours, so once you know you enjoy it, we will advise you on the right tabla to buy for your budget.
All tabla classes are held in person at Laxmi Music Academy in Puchong, Malaysia. We do not offer online tabla classes, the physical presence of the teacher is essential for correcting hand posture and stroke technique, especially in the early stages of learning.
Most students who attend consistently can play simple rhythms and keep time for a basic song within a few months of starting. The timeline depends on how regularly you come to class. Everyone moves at their own pace, and that is perfectly fine.
We teach both Carnatic (South Indian) and Hindustani (North Indian) tabla styles, with the curriculum also covering core Hindustani tabla theory to give you a complete grounding in the instrument.
No. Our classes focus on building strong beginner foundations: real skill, good technique, and genuine enjoyment, without the pressure of formal exams or grading. The goal is simple. That you love playing and keep improving at your own pace.
