Harmonium FAQ

Questions, answered.

A harmonium is a free-reed keyboard instrument. You pump a bellows with one hand to push air over thin brass reeds, while playing the keys with the other. Its warm, sustained tone makes it the classic companion to the singing voice in Indian devotional and classical music.
No. We have a harmonium for you to use in class. If you ever decide you would like one of your own, we will guide you on choosing it at the right price, so you never buy blind.
It is one of the easiest Indian instruments to begin with. The keys are laid out clearly, like a piano, and most students are playing simple melodies within their first few classes.
From age 5 to adult. If a child can sit and press a key, they can begin. The harmonium is a wonderful first instrument. It builds the ear, the voice and finger coordination all at once.
Swaras (notes) and scales, bellows-and-hand coordination, and how to shape a clear tone. From there you will move on to devotional songs (bhajans and kirtans), kritis, and how to accompany a singer.
Harmonium is taught as a private 1-to-1 class. That means every minute is focused on you, at your own pace, ideal for an instrument so closely tied to your own voice and ear.
