History
Thevaram finds its roots in the ancient Tamil land, with its origins tracing back to the 7th century CE. Thevaram, along with its counterpart Thiruvasagam, is considered a crucial part of the Shaiva Siddhanta tradition. These compositions were written by the celebrated Tamil saints, also known as Nayanars, who ardently worshipped Lord Shiva. Among the most renowned Nayanars were Appar, Sundarar, and Sambandar, who composed Thevaram in praise of Lord Shiva and his divine manifestations.

Students learning Thevaram benefit greatly from also learning Sangeetham due to the following reasons:
- Musical Understanding: Thevaram hymns are deeply rooted in musical traditions. Learning Sangeetham enables students to grasp the nuances of melody, rhythm, and musical structures, enhancing their understanding and interpretation of Thevaram compositions.
- Vocal Training: Thevaram is primarily sung, and learning Sangeetham helps students develop their vocal abilities. They learn proper techniques, breath control, and voice modulation, enabling them to effectively render the devotional verses of Thevaram with clarity and expression.
- Melodic Exploration: Sangeetham provides students with a rich repertoire of ragas (melodic scales) and improvisational techniques. This empowers them to explore different melodic patterns and ornamentations within Thevaram, adding depth and creativity to their renditions.
- Emotional Expression: Thevaram hymns are infused with profound emotions of devotion and spirituality. Learning Sangeetham equips students with the tools to convey these emotions effectively through their voice, adding a deeper layer of expression and connecting with the devotional essence of the compositions.
- Cultural Preservation: Thevaram is an integral part of Tamil cultural heritage. By learning Sangeetham along with Thevaram, students actively contribute to the preservation and promotion of this rich musical tradition, ensuring its continuity for future generations.
