Janta Varisai: Why Every Note Is Sung Twice
Sing it once, then sing it again. Simple looking, quietly demanding.
Once Sarali Varisai starts feeling comfortable, the next step is Janta Varisai. And when parents first see it written down, the reaction is almost always the same: is that it? Every note just sung twice? Yes. And trust me, it is a lot harder and a lot more useful than it looks on paper.
Let me explain what is actually going on here.
What is Janta Varisai?
Janta means paired, or doubled. So instead of singing Sa Ri Ga Ma one note at a time the way you did in Sarali Varisai, you now sing each note twice before moving on: Sa Sa, Ri Ri, Ga Ga, Ma Ma. Same swaras, same order, just doubled.
Looks almost lazy, right? It is not. Doubling a note is one of the most revealing things you can ask a voice to do.
Why doubling exposes everything
To sing a note twice, you have to hit it cleanly, hold it steady, stop, and then find that exact same pitch again. If your pitch drifts even slightly between the two, everyone hears it immediately. There is nowhere to hide.
What it is actually building
Three things, all at once. First, a clean attack, meaning your voice arrives on the note rather than sliding up to it vaguely. Second, steadiness, holding a pitch without wobbling. Third, and this is the big one, accurate recall, the ability to return to a pitch you just sang.
That third skill matters enormously later. Every song you will ever sing asks you to leave a note and come back to it. Janta Varisai is where that ability gets built, quietly, one doubled note at a time.
Sing a note twice and any wobble has nowhere left to hide.
Did you know?
Teachers often listen more carefully during Janta Varisai than during almost any later stage. Because the exercise is so bare, with no rhythm tricks or melody to distract, a teacher can hear exactly what a student's voice is doing. It is diagnostic as much as it is training.
How long does this stage take?
It varies, genuinely. Some students move through Janta Varisai comfortably in a few weeks, others take longer, and neither is a problem. What matters is that the doubling sounds clean and even, not that it happened fast. A rushed Janta shows up later as a shaky voice in Geetam, and nobody wants that.
What your child gains here
A voice they can actually rely on. After Janta Varisai, a student stops guessing at pitches and starts placing them deliberately. That confidence carries into every single stage that follows, and it is genuinely noticeable when someone has done this work properly.
🎧 No pressure, just show up
Nothing needs doing at home. Janta Varisai is built in class, with the teacher listening closely and correcting gently as you go, which is exactly the part that cannot happen alone.
If your child hums it around the house because they like the pattern, lovely. But that is entirely their choice, never something we ask for.
And after Janta?
Next comes Dhattu Varisai, where the notes stop moving in order and start jumping around. That is a genuinely different challenge, and Janta is what makes it possible. Come learn with us, and we will make sure each step is solid before we move to the next one.

Your questions, answered
What is Janta Varisai?
Janta Varisai is a set of Carnatic exercises where each swara is sung twice, such as Sa Sa, Ri Ri, Ga Ga. It follows Sarali Varisai and builds vocal precision and steadiness.
Why are the notes sung twice in Janta Varisai?
Doubling forces a singer to strike a note cleanly, hold it steady, and then find that exact same pitch again. Any drift becomes immediately audible, which is precisely what makes the exercise so effective.
What comes after Janta Varisai?
Dhattu Varisai comes next, where notes move in leaps rather than in order. After that comes Alankaram, which introduces the seven basic talas, and then Geetam, the first proper song.
How long does a student stay on Janta Varisai?
It varies from a few weeks to considerably longer, and both are perfectly normal. What matters is that the doubled notes sound clean and even, not how quickly the stage is completed.
