Your First Carnatic Class: What Actually Happens
You will sing on day one. That is genuinely the whole plan.
Feeling a bit nervous about the first class? Completely normal, and honestly kind of sweet. Almost everyone walks in slightly unsure. So let me just tell you exactly what happens, start to finish, so there are zero surprises and you can walk in relaxed.
Spoiler: it is a lot gentler than people expect.
Before you arrive
Here is the easiest part. You need to bring nothing. No instrument, no books, no prepared songs, nothing memorised. For vocal classes, your voice is the instrument and it is already installed. Just show up in comfortable clothes you can sit in easily.
What to expect in the room
A calm space, comfortable seating on the floor or a chair, a teacher, and a quiet drone humming in the background from a tanpura or sruti box. Small groups or one to one. No stage, no audience, no pressure.
What actually happens in the class
First, the teacher will listen to your voice for a moment and help find your sruti, the pitch that suits you comfortably. Everyone's is different, and there is no good or bad one, it is just where your voice sits happily.
Then you sing. Genuinely, on day one. Usually just Sa, held gently, letting your voice settle onto the drone. Then a few more swaras. The teacher sings, you echo. That is the whole method, and it is how every Carnatic musician who ever lived started out.
You will sing on day one. That is genuinely the whole plan.
Did you know?
Most students are genuinely surprised by how quickly the first sounds come out. People walk in convinced they cannot sing, and forty minutes later they are holding a steady Sa. It happens constantly, and it never stops being lovely to watch.
And after the class?
You go home. That is it. No homework, no assignments, nothing to rehearse before next week. We genuinely do not want anyone drilling at home, because that is exactly how the joy gets squeezed out of singing. Everything you need happens in the room, with a teacher beside you.
What you walk away with
Usually a slightly surprised smile. Most first-timers expect to feel awkward and instead find it calming. Something about sitting with a steady drone and letting your voice rest on it just settles people. It is a genuinely nice way to spend an hour.
🎧 Nothing to prepare, ever
There is nothing to do before your first class, and nothing to do after it either. Just turn up as you are.
If you feel like humming afterwards because you enjoyed it, brilliant. But that is entirely your call, never something we ask for.
Come and see for yourself
Honestly, reading about it will only get you so far. The nerves disappear about ten minutes in, every single time. Come sit in on a class, meet the teachers, and find out how easy that first Sa actually is.
Words to know
Sruti, the base pitch chosen to suit your own comfortable voice.
Swara, a musical note, one of the seven building blocks of a song.
Sruti box, a small electronic drone that holds the pitch steadily through a class.
Sarali Varisai, the first graded exercises, which you will meet soon after your first lessons.
Your questions, answered
What should I bring to my first Carnatic music class?
Nothing at all for vocal classes. No instrument, books or prepared material is needed. Comfortable clothing you can sit in easily is all that is required.
Will I actually sing in the first class?
Yes. Almost every student sings on day one, usually starting with a single steady Sa resting on the drone, then a few more swaras echoed after the teacher.
Do I need any musical background to start?
None whatsoever. Most beginners arrive with no musical training at all, and many are convinced they cannot sing. The method is built entirely around starting from zero.
Is there homework after a Carnatic class?
No. Everything is taught and built in class with a teacher present. Singing at home is entirely optional and never assigned, because keeping the joy in singing matters more than drilling.
