No experience is needed at all. All our classes, vocal, violin, veenai, and harmonium, are beginner friendly by design. We start from absolute zero: how to sit, breathe, tune, and produce the first notes. Students from age 5 to 65 have joined with no background and progressed beautifully.
There's nothing to be nervous about. Your very first lesson starts from absolute zero, and your teacher will know you're new and guide you gently, step by step. It's completely normal to feel shy at first, just follow the teacher's instructions. And here's the beauty of a group class: you get to watch and listen as the other students sing first, so by the time it's your turn, you'll already have a good feel for what to do. By the end of the class, those nerves will have melted away.
Don't worry, and don't give up halfway, even if it comes out wrong; just see it through to the end. We always tell our students: never be afraid to make mistakes, because mistakes are exactly how we learn. Every lesson is warm and relaxed, you're here to enjoy music, not to stress about it.
Our group classes usually have between 10 and 20 students, and learning alongside others is one of the best parts of it. You pick up so much just by listening to the others sing, the energy keeps everyone motivated, and there's a warm, encouraging atmosphere in the room. The teacher guides the whole group and makes sure everyone gets their turn and their own corrections.
We welcome students of all ages. Children as young as 5 can begin with our junior vocal or violin curriculum. Adults and seniors are also very welcome. Many of our most dedicated students started learning Carnatic music in their 40s and 50s. There is no upper age limit. Learning music is a lifelong journey.

Everyone can learn Carnatic vocal. The notion of "good voice" is largely about training, not natural talent. Carnatic music teaches you to control pitch, breathe correctly, and produce tones you didn't know you had. Most students are surprised by how much their voice improves within the first few months. Come as you are. We'll work with your voice as it is.
Most students can sing simple bhajans and geethams within 2 to 3 months of regular attendance. More complex compositions like kritis and ragas take 6 to 12 months. What matters most is simply turning up to class each week. Everything is taught and repeated in the lesson itself.
Carnatic music is the classical music tradition of South India, one of the oldest, most sophisticated musical systems in the world. It differs from Bollywood (which is popular film music) and Western classical music in several key ways: • It is built on ragas (melodic frameworks with strict rules for ascending and descending notes) • It uses talas (rhythmic cycles) with great mathematical precision • It emphasises improvisation within strict grammatical rules • It has deep spiritual and devotional roots. Many compositions are prayers Carnatic music trains the ear and voice in ways that stay with you for life.
Both. Our curriculum teaches the complete system: shruti (pitch), swaras (notes), saptaswaras (7 base notes), varisai (graded exercises), alankarams, talam (rhythm), and raga grammar, alongside songs, kritis, and compositions. Understanding theory makes you a much more complete musician and helps you learn new pieces faster over time.
If you'd like to! Many students enjoy playing or singing at family gatherings, temple events, and community programs, at a comfortable, beginner-friendly level. We also hold our own yearly performance event, a lovely chance for students who want it to take the stage and show how far they have come. Our focus is on building real skill, confidence and enjoyment, not on formal exams or grading. And performing is always optional. Many students learn purely for the joy of it and the personal, spiritual side.
Absolutely. Thevaram hymns by the Nayanmars and Pancha Puranam are integrated into our vocal curriculum. Students who join Sangeetham vocal classes naturally learn these sacred hymns and become capable of singing at temple events, namakarana ceremonies, and community bhajan sessions. No separate enrollment is needed. Thevaram is part of every vocal class.

Yes, you can, and it's a wonderful combination. Taking Sangeetham (vocal) alongside your instrument helps you understand the music much better, because you'll be playing on your instrument the very songs you learn to sing. Without that vocal grounding, many students find it hard to get the tune right. Just note that instrument classes are taught only in Puchong (vocal can be online or in person).
Do let us know, so we can arrange a replacement class for you. The earlier you tell us, the more likely it is we can fit you in, so please give us a heads-up: we'll check the available replacement-class timings and share the options with you.
Both work beautifully. It comes down to what suits you. Group classes are our most popular choice, and there's a real magic to learning together: you're motivated by your classmates, you learn from the corrections others get too, you build confidence singing or playing alongside peers, and there's a wonderful sense of community, plus it's more affordable. Private 1-to-1 classes give you the teacher's full, undivided attention at your own pace. Some instruments like Harmonium are private only, while Tabla and Mridangam offer both. Not sure which is right? Just ask, we'll happily recommend the best fit.
We follow a structured curriculum that builds your foundation step by step, so you progress the right way. In a group class, the lessons are already planned for everyone, so we can't tailor them to individual song requests. It wouldn't be fair to the other students. In a private 1-to-1 class, though, there's more flexibility, and we may be able to work in a song you'd love to learn.
It depends on the instrument, check the instrument's own page for full details. As a quick guide: we provide the instrument for Veena, Mridangam and Harmonium classes, so you can start without buying anything. For Violin and Tabla you'll need your own, but don't buy blind; we'll guide you on exactly what to get. (Vocal needs no instrument at all.)
No, progress happens in the class itself. We understand you've got a busy schedule, so we teach you everything during the lesson, and one class a week is plenty to keep you moving forward. If you'd like to sing at home you're very welcome to, but it's completely optional.
Everyone is welcome. We love and respect people of all religions. We're also honest with you. Carnatic music (Sangeetham) includes many Hindu devotional songs, so we'll always tell you what a song is about before you learn it. Many students of other faiths enjoy the music and culture and are perfectly comfortable with this; if you'd prefer, we can lean more on the technical, non-devotional side. Either way, we'll be upfront about what each lesson contains so you can choose what feels right for you.
Our classes are conducted in English and Tamil. You don't need to speak Tamil to join. Many of our students don't, and we make sure you can always follow along. The songs themselves come in many languages, Tamil, Sanskrit, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and Hindi, and we teach you the pronunciation and meaning, so you can sing them beautifully whatever language you speak at home.
It's our very own app (ragatune.com), built exclusively for our students. It tracks your attendance and progress and gives you fun, interactive activities to learn with. Gone are the days of just showing up to sing and leaving. We use the app to make learning music far more exciting and interactive, both in class and between lessons.
No, we don't record our classes. You're welcome to record your own lesson on your phone for your own reference, but please keep it just for you and don't share it with anyone. This part really matters: there are other students learning in the same session, so we all have to respect each other's privacy.
Very little! Just a phone, tablet, or laptop with a stable internet connection, and earphones if you have them. Your device's built-in microphone works perfectly fine. We'll share lesson materials on screen during class so you can follow along in real time. We do ask that you join from a quiet place, so that when you unmute to sing, there's no background noise disturbing the rest of the class.
You'll be in very experienced hands. Our teachers include Mataji Laxmi (49 years of teaching), Master Bala (22 years), and Teacher Nanthini (15 years), together, decades of experience across vocal and instruments. More than their years, they're known for their patience and genuine care, guiding students from complete beginners all the way to confident performers.
Absolutely, and you'd be amazed how quickly that changes. Shy, quiet children are very often the ones who surprise themselves the most. Our teachers are gentle and patient, and the group setting actually helps: your child watches and follows the others, joins in at their own pace, and slowly finds their confidence. Most parents tell us they notice a real difference, not just in singing, but in their child's confidence, within the first few months.
Yes, we do offer grading and exams, they're a nice way to check your progress, and certificates are available too (for a fee, as they cost us to produce and prepare the trophies). But let's be honest with you: these are nice-to-haves. A music certificate won't win anyone a doctor's or engineer's seat, what Sangeetham really gives you is creativity, the ability to think outside the box, and a deep connection with your culture. So exams are completely optional, and we never pressure our students to take them.
