"Good professional teacher who encourages students very well. My daughter learned very well from the teacher in just a few months. She takes her own time to teach each and every student efficiently and never gives up on them. She helps students improve from their mistakes, and gives good explanations before each lesson so the students understand well."

TABLA
Treble

The tabla is a pair of hand drums from the Indian subcontinent, the wooden tabla for treble, the metallic bayan for bass, played with the palms and fingers. Central to both Carnatic and Hindustani classical traditions and dating back centuries, it is one of the most sophisticated percussion instruments in the world, capable of everything from gentle meditative patterns to explosive rhythmic fireworks.

Why Tabla

Why Learn Tabla

More than music. Tabla builds rhythm, focus and a sharper mind that carries into everything else.

Tabla drums

Rhythm Mastery

Develop a deep understanding of tala (rhythm cycles) used across Indian classical music. Tabla training builds an internal clock that lifts every musician around you.

🧠

Cognitive Growth

Studies show learning tabla enhances mathematical thinking, pattern recognition, and working memory. The complex bol syllables engage both hemispheres of the brain simultaneously.

What You'll Learn
Saraswati, goddess of music and learning

No guessing. Here is exactly what you will learn.

Beginner, Foundation & Basics
Introduction to the tabla: proper hand position, seating posture, and instrument care. Core bols including Na, Ta, Tin, Ka, Ge, Dha. Single stroke exercises to build muscle memory and tone production. Understanding of basic tala (Teentaal 16 beats) and how to count cycles aloud.
Early Rhythms. Your First Talas
Playing the full Teentaal theka with a clear, even tone. Keeping a steady cycle while counting aloud. Introduction to Keherwa tala (8 beats) for simple songs and bhajans. Building hand independence and confidence on both drums.
First Compositions, Simple Kaidas
Your first simple kaidas (theme-and-variation pieces) within Teentaal. Playing patterns in double speed (dugun). Cleaner, faster strokes with good tone. The satisfying moment when a full pattern finally flows.
Playing Along, Keeping Steady Time
Putting it all together: keeping steady time while someone sings or claps along. Playing simple accompaniment for a bhajan or song at a comfortable pace. The real goal of these classes, the quiet confidence of holding a rhythm for others.

All tabla classes are held in person at Laxmi Music Academy in Puchong, Malaysia. We do not offer online tabla classes, the physical presence of the teacher is essential for correcting hand posture and stroke technique, especially in the early stages of learning.

Most students who attend consistently can play simple rhythms and keep time for a basic song within a few months of starting. The timeline depends on how regularly you come to class. Everyone moves at their own pace, and that is perfectly fine.

We teach both Carnatic (South Indian) and Hindustani (North Indian) tabla styles, with the curriculum also covering core Hindustani tabla theory to give you a complete grounding in the instrument.
